William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition was named from William Lowell Putnam, Harvard College Class of 1882. In 1927 Mrs. Putnam established a fund to support such a mathematics competition in her husband's memory. After a few, and apparently unsatisfactory, dual meets, it was decided to hold an annual national contest in mathematics. This medal dates from one of the earliest competitions.
